120amp Jaguar Alternator Upgrade **HOW TOO**

For the last few weeks I’ve been looking at doing the Big 3 upgrade and getting a better alternator. I already purchased the 0/1 and #2 wire and ends for the Big 3 upgrade but the jury was still out on what I was going to do about the alternator.

Well yesterday I found on this site that a Jaguar Alternator off a a 1993-97 XJ6 will plug right up to our stock harness and bolt right up to the stock mount by just slightly bending it. Also you have to swap over your v-belt pulley.

This intrigued me so I thought I would swing by the parts store and pick one up and give it a try. That proved to be slightly harder than I thought. Out of three parts companies (with multiple stores) only one had one (autozone) and it was at their warehouse on the other side of town. So I got the alternator for $142.99 + $90 core with lifetime warranty. I asked the manager about the core since the alternator I would have to bring back would not be the same, His reply was, “Just make sure there is an alternator in there and I’m happy”.

So, I get home and get to work taking the pulley off of each and moving the v-belt pulley over to the new Jag Alt. The Toyota pulley really is easy to get off with basic tools. All you need is a 10mm socket on a 3/8 breaker bar or wratchet and a 22mm wrench. As seen below I just slipped the wrench over the nut and rested it on the workbench and then just bounced full upper body weight on the breaker bar and…… Presto the nut comes loose and you just take it right off.

Now taking the pulley off of the new Jag Alt is easy if you have the right tools, otherwise I don’t know how I could have got it to break loose. I tried to do the same as above with the Toyota Alt but the nut is to far recessed to get a good bite on it with a wrench. So I figured that since im not going to be using this stock Jag Pulley I can just grab it with large pliers and the hit the nut with an impact. Bam right off she came… easy a pie.

Now time to put the toyota pulley on the Jag Alt.

***NOTE*** The first alternator that i got would not allow the pulley to fully center itself on the taper of the shaft. I returned the Alt and got a new one. The new one worked just fine ****

All you have to do here is place the toyota pulley on the Alt shaft with the shaft facing up and slowly hand tighten the nut so the pulley can center itself on the taper. Now since it is damn near impossible to get enough torque with two wrenches to get the nut tightened on the shaft well enough i decided to do the following

i wrapped the pulley with a towel and grab it gently with the pliers and then hit it with the impact with two quick bursts. The impact hits the nut so fast that you barely have to hold the pliers so you arent going to hurt or scar the pulley at all.

Here is the final product

*** NOTE *** after i got the pulley tightened onto the shaft i attached a socket onto my drill and put the drill on high and ran the Alt to make sure the pulley wasn't off center and didn vibrate. Everything was fine.

Now I would show you how it all bolts back to the truck but my motor is currently out and being rebuilt by 22RE Performance. I will continue this write up when i get the motor back but it is supposed to just bolt right up like stock after slightly bending the upper arm of the mount.

I hope this might help someone. I know there are other options for a hight output Alt but with this route you don't have to buy any brackets and you have a hight output Alt with a lifetime warranty.

Let me know if you have any questions

All the glass is in great shape new front window about two years ago, rear window still works. New alternator about two months ago as well as a new blower motor. Also has a new throttle cable and kickdown cable. 4x4 still works fine. Auto trans, 22RE motor. 31-10.50x15 Cooper STT's with minimal tread.
Just up and quit on me but I believe it has a blown head gasket.
Really hate to take it to the scrap yard because the parts are so hard to find these days.
Asking $500.

hey yall, so recently my 1985 toyota pickup 4x4 has been being a paid. First it started by not wanting to start and i have had to jump start it a coulple of times, so i took the starter apart and cleaned it out then it worked fine for about a day or two. also since the whole starting problem it does this odd thing were when i drive it for about ten minutes and come to stop at a light, the check engine light comes on and when i pull away the engine stuggles to go, like as if it is running out gas, it does it through first and second gear then it stops and its fine. then it doesnt do it for a while. so i checked the light codes and it came back with code 4 and 6. just wondering if anyone had any input on how to make this stop!!! thanks!

Hi Folks,

I'm thinking it would be a good idea to install a separate transmission cooler. I love milkshakes, but not pink ones they're messy.:nono: So I was thinking that I should install a separate transmission cooler and just plug the old rad. I didn't buy one yet, but in researching, Hayden seems like a good bet, but their instruction manual says to not install separately unless the radiator failed and is costly to fix (and then upsize the cooler). I'm wondering if anyone has installed a separate one, what you installed and what you think of it. And, how did you plug the old rad?

Alright guys. I have a 1995 toyota pickup with a 22re. I put a rebuilt motor in it, pretty much new everything. Motor has over 1000 miles on it now. Did a good break in period and everything...

I just went into my friends mud swamp with the truck and I have a 3 inch body lift with no gap guards. I throw mud from my tires up into my engine bay and today I went in about a foot of water/mud. I got through the pit once with no problems but then i noticed after I let the truck sit and idle that it was idling very low. It idles about 500 rpms (normally 800-900) and sounded like it was leaking air from somewhere like i could hear a little hiss or something. When I jumped in the truck and started to drive it it has a huge hesitation/stutter and didn't get up to speed until like 3500 rpm which is where the 22re "turbo" kicked in... So I drove it around for a few miles and slowly the bogging got better after driving it for awhile. Then, returning back to the house, I let it sit for awhile maybe 20 minutes and jump in and start it up and it starts idling low again and does the same thing, bogs for awhile until i drive it a few miles...

I dont know where to start! could it simply be like an 02 sensor? maybe water got into the distributor? I have no idea what to think anymore? Could it be a vacuum leak somewhere? I had it running and sprayed ether near all gaskets and injectors and didn't get any sudden bursts of energy...
Can someone help me out on this one? thanks!

So I determined that my vacuum advance was not working at all. I bought a reman distributor because it was cheaper than just the Vacuum Advance by itself. I installed it and I have 2 problems.

1. When installed the distributor is all the way maxed out in the adjustment window to hit 0* on the timing mark (w/o vac advance hooked up and lines plugged).

I had read that it should be in the center of the window for 0*

I have removed and installed 1 tooth forward, and backward. With the distributor installed in either position, I cant even get it to 0*

I have also tried switching it 180* and the truck wont even run, so I am very confident the distributor is installed correctly.

2. If I set the timing to 0* w/o the vac advance hooked up and the vac lines plugged, when I reattach the vac advance it only goes to around 8*

If i set the timing to 12* with the vac advance hooked up, when I disconnect it and plug the lines the timing is at 4-5*

I have checked all the vacuum hoses against the diagrams in the FSM and they are ran correctly.

The truck certainly runs better than when the vac advance was not working at all, but I would like to get it set to where it should be.

as of right now it is set so that @ idle w/vac adv it is at 12*

Any ideas of what to adjust, check, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys I am taking a bit of a poll. I understand these little 22re motors are a little noisy in the valve train . But I am getting a noise from what I think is the timing chain. I spoke to engbldr and he told me to pull the valve cover and look down the at the tensioner and see if the oil pump bolt is making contact with the tensioner . My question is how many of you have had this happen and have you been lucky with just putting a shorter bolt or a washer under the head and curing the noise . basically im hoping I can pull the balancer and shim the bolt and wont have to get the timing cover off to actually replace the tensioner as Im afraid that it will leak after Im done . lol thanks in advance you guys are friggin awesome !!!

What have other people done? My dash is already cut up so I'm not worried about that. I was just going to order a new stereo (cd with mp3 hookup) and see how it goes, but I figured I throw it out there to this group first. Obviously the fit won't be perfect, but will a modern stereo more or less fit in the modified stock location, then just some wire splicing, or what?

Thanks.
